Fostering:
A Great Way to Volunteer
HOW LONG WOULD IT BE FOR?
We work with you…some people are able to foster for a couple of months (i.e. with a nursing mom and kittens) for example and some are only able to foster for a couple of weeks due to circumstances in their life.
CAN YOU FOSTER IF YOU HAVE PETS ALREADY?
Absolutely. Hi Tor can assist you with introducing the foster to your other pet(s) however an isolation room is preferred for the first fewdays to help acclimate all animals safely and properly.
ARE FOSTER CATS/KITTENS HEALTHY?
Generally, they are. However, due to their time in the shelter, the cats/kittens often leave with a kitty cold. This is easily resolved with a 10-day course of antibiotics. Hi Tor will train you on how to give medication and provide you with all the necessary medication.
WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?
If you are in a position to cover the cost of food, toys, litter, etc., then that is wonderful as we are a non-profit organization. We cover all medical expenses but they must be pre-authorized by our Foster Coordinator.
WHAT IS FOSTERING?
Fostering is bringing an animal into your home and taking care of them until they are adopted out.
WHY FOSTER?
Every year Hi Tor receives thousands of animals many of whom need the kind of care only a loving home can provide. Fostering allows Hi Tor to get more animals out of the shelter and on the path to adoption.
HOW DO POSSIBLE ADOPTERS SEE THE FOSTER?
Hi Tor asks that you provide us with a picture of the pet, along with a brief description of their temperament (likes/dislikes) which we post to our website and others (Pet Finder, Facebook, etc.) The potential adopter contacts Hi Tor and we will arrange for the person to meet your foster in your home (if you agree) or at the shelter, or at an adoption event. In addition, Hi Tor does adoption events weekly at Petco and your foster cats should also participate in that.
In addition, our Cat Foster Coordinator works with every foster parent at the beginning to ensure a positive and rewarding experience.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT DOES HI TOR OFFER FOSTER PARENTS?
We have a number of volunteers who have plenty of experience with cats or who have themselves fostered and they are available for consultation by phone or email.
